On March 21, 2008, my life changed. At 11:30 pm, I woke up to smell smoke. At first I thought it was a fireplace that I was smelling or my imagination. I turned over and went back to sleep. The smell became stronger. I got out of bed and turned on the light. Nothing. I opened my bedroom door and looked out into the hallway. There was a fine mist of smoke.
I got dressed and went into the living room. Still nothing. I opened the front door of my apartment and walked down the hall to the main entrance into the house. I was greeted by a wall of fire. The house next door was completely engulfed.
I started ringing my neighbors doorbells. I then ran up the stairs and started banging on their doors. They opened their doors and told them that the house next door was on fire. I ran back downstairs and gathered my pets, cell phone and keys and then ran out into the hall waiting for my neighbors. We all went outside together.
Running off of my front porch, I could feel the heat from the fire as it was burning my front porch. It was quite intense. We stood on the corner for what seemed like forever before the firetrucks showed up.
On that night, I lost almost everything. This past year has been a living hell for me.
After the fire, I moved in with a less than sane roommate. It got to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore and moved out. I went and moved in with my father. It wasn’t bad living with my Dad, but it was 2 hours away from where I was living. I decided to live there and commute everyday to my job. 2 hours there. 2 hours back. It was tiring, but I did it. Until my car decided to break down. It kept overheating and nobody could figure out what was wrong with it. It turned out to be the engine computer. Because I no longer had a way to get to work, I had to quit the one job that I loved.
With the economy the way it is, I have been having trouble finding a job. At best, I can get a crap job. I know, a job is a job, but I am an experienced person who attended college. I should be able to land something that pays halfway decent. The problem is, there is one job and 500 applicants for it.
In a nutshell, that has been my year. I sincerely hope this year is a much better one. I don’t think I can take another year like that one.
